Greenvolt Secures 499MWh Battery Storage Deal in Italy

Greenvolt Power has secured a significant foothold in Italy’s burgeoning battery storage market, winning a 499MWh contract in the country’s first large-scale battery storage auction. The 75MW project, located in the South and Calabria area, marks Greenvolt’s inaugural 8-hour lithium-ion battery system, signaling the company’s commitment to long-duration energy storage solutions.

“Batteries, a sector in which Greenvolt is one of the leading European players, are fundamental to ensuring grid stability at a time of strong expansion of renewable energy,” stated Greenvolt Group CEO João Manso Neto. He added, “At the same time, this 15-year contract represents a clear reinforcement of our operations in the Italian market.”

The Italian auction, known as MACSE (Electric Storage Procurement Mechanism), awarded a total of 10GWh of capacity, with bids amounting to 40GWh. Launched by TERNA, the auction aims to bolster system flexibility and support Italy’s power sector decarbonization efforts. Two further auctions are scheduled by 2028, targeting a total of 70GWh of operational capacity by 2030.

This development underscores the growing importance of battery storage in Europe’s energy transition. As renewable energy sources like wind and solar continue to expand, the need for large-scale storage solutions to manage intermittency and ensure grid stability becomes increasingly critical. Greenvolt’s success in Italy’s competitive auction highlights the sector’s potential and the strategic role of battery storage in Europe’s decarbonized future.

The outcome of this auction may also influence other European countries to adopt similar mechanisms, accelerating the deployment of battery storage projects across the continent. As the sector evolves, the interplay between policy, technology, and market dynamics will shape the trajectory of energy storage, making this a space to watch closely.
