Avangrid and Amazon have inked a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the Oregon Trail Solar Project, a 57MW DC facility set to commence operations in 2027. Located in Gilliam County, Oregon, the project will supply renewable energy to Amazon’s data centers in the region, marking the second clean energy PPA between the two companies in the Pacific Northwest.
The Oregon Trail Solar Project, featuring over 100,000 solar panels, is expected to generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of about 10,000 US homes. During construction, the project will create around 200 jobs, largely supported by local union labor. Over its lifetime, the facility is anticipated to contribute approximately $6 million in payments in lieu of taxes and property taxes, supporting public services such as schools and infrastructure.
Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, “This agreement reflects Amazon and Avangrid’s commitment to delivering reliable energy solutions that will help meet America’s growing energy needs and support the growth of critical infrastructure. Oregon Trail Solar builds on our strong presence in Oregon and deep partnership with Amazon, and we’re proud to help power the future with projects that bring lasting economic benefits to local communities, bolster our nation’s energy independence, and maximise energy production.”
The project adds to Avangrid’s substantial footprint in Oregon, where it has operated since 2001 and currently manages 2.5GW of capacity. The company also manages the National Training Center in Sherman County and maintains a corporate office in Portland. Beyond Oregon, Avangrid and Amazon hold agreements across several renewable ventures in Illinois, Ohio, and North Carolina.
This development underscores a growing trend of corporate investments in renewable energy projects, driven by the need to power data centers and other critical infrastructure sustainably. As more companies commit to renewable energy targets, such partnerships are likely to shape the future of the energy sector, fostering innovation, job creation, and economic benefits for local communities. The Oregon Trail Solar Project serves as a testament to the potential of collaborative efforts between corporations and energy providers to advance renewable energy goals and contribute to a more sustainable future.
