Framatome to Modernize Kozloduy Nuclear Plant’s Electrical Systems

Framatome has inked a contract to overhaul and modernize the electrical systems at Bulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear power plant, a move that could signal a broader trend in the nuclear sector. The agreement, announced September 11, focuses on the no-break power supply systems of the plant’s two VVER-1000 reactors, first renovated by Framatome during the plant’s modernization in the 2000s. The upgrade will introduce new components adhering to top-tier international performance standards, bolstering the reactors’ safety levels.

This contract is not just about maintenance; it’s a strategic step in the lifetime extension of Kozloduy’s existing reactors. “We are proud to contribute to the lifetime extension of the Kozloduy power plant,” said Guirec Maugat, senior executive vice president of Framatome’s Installed Base Business Unit. “The renewal of this multi-year service contract reaffirms the solid partnership between Framatome and Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, built over two decades.”

The Kozloduy power plant, Bulgaria’s sole nuclear facility, generates over a third of the country’s annual electricity. The modernization project is crucial for ensuring Bulgaria’s energy security and maintaining a reliable, low-carbon electricity supply. It also underscores Framatome’s growing commitment to the region, following the establishment of its Bulgarian subsidiary, Framatome EOOD, in 2021, and a recent memorandum of understanding with Sofia Technical University to collaborate on nuclear energy education and training.

This development could set a precedent for other aging nuclear plants grappling with the dilemma of decommissioning versus lifetime extension. As countries strive to meet climate goals, extending the life of existing nuclear facilities might emerge as a pragmatic solution, balancing the need for low-carbon energy with the challenges of new nuclear build. However, the success of such endeavors hinges on robust safety upgrades and reliable maintenance, as exemplified by this contract. The nuclear sector will be watching closely to see if this becomes a blueprint for others to follow.
