China’s Coal Mines Embrace Green Tech Revolution for Efficiency and Safety

In the heart of China’s coal mining industry, a revolution is underway, driven by cutting-edge technologies that promise to redefine efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Researchers, led by WANG Guofa of the China Coal Technology & Engineering Group in Beijing, are pioneering high-efficiency and energy-saving technologies for large-scale intelligent equipment in coal mines. Their work, recently published in the journal *Mining Automation*, is set to transform the energy sector, offering significant commercial impacts and paving the way for greener mining practices.

At the forefront of this technological wave is the upgrade of 10 kV power supply systems at fully mechanized working faces. This innovation aims to reduce voltage and electric energy losses, a critical step towards more efficient coal extraction. “Optimized power system design and enhanced electrical safety are key to ensuring reliable operation,” explains WANG Guofa. By integrating high-voltage equipment protection and advanced safety performance testing technologies, these upgrades are poised to become a standard in modern coal mines.

The intelligent high-efficiency variable frequency drive integrated unit is another groundbreaking development. This technology combines variable frequency control and permanent magnet direct drive motor technology with intelligent control and predictive maintenance. The result? Improved operational efficiency, reliability, and energy savings, coupled with reduced equipment failure rates and maintenance costs. “This is a game-changer for the industry,” says WANG Guofa. “It not only enhances productivity but also significantly cuts down on long-term operational expenses.”

Underground mining is also witnessing a green revolution with the electrification of mobile equipment. High-performance lithium batteries, digital drive-by-wire systems, autonomous driving, and intelligent dispatching are enabling zero-emission, low-noise, and high-efficiency operations. The implementation of standardized explosion-proof lithium battery power, rapid battery swapping, and vehicle-charger coordination with full-time management is alleviating range anxiety in underground operations. “This technology is a step towards sustainable mining,” notes WANG Guofa. “It addresses environmental concerns while boosting operational efficiency.”

Lastly, the shaftless magnetic coupling drive hoist is set to enhance mine transport efficiency and equipment stability. This innovative system integrates a multi-channel anti-shock safety braking system and health management technologies for key components, addressing the low efficiency and high failure rates of traditional hoists. “This is about creating a safer and more efficient mining environment,” WANG Guofa emphasizes.

The research published in *Mining Automation* highlights the potential of these technologies to shape the future of coal mining. As the energy sector continues to evolve, these innovations offer a glimpse into a more efficient, sustainable, and profitable future. The commercial impacts are substantial, promising to reduce operational costs, enhance safety, and minimize environmental footprints. As the industry moves forward, the work of WANG Guofa and his team will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in driving these advancements.
