NKT Completes Critical NorNed Interconnector Cable Replacement

NKT has completed a critical cable replacement project for the Dutch section of the NorNed interconnector, a vital link in Europe’s energy infrastructure. The interconnector, which facilitates the exchange of renewable hydropower from Norway and wind power from the Netherlands, is now back in operation after a planned outage that began in early April and concluded in early June.

The project, undertaken by the Dutch transmission system operator TenneT, aimed to ensure the secure transmission of electricity between the two countries. NKT, the company responsible for the cable replacement, delivered high-voltage cable systems for the onshore part of the interconnector in Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The total order included the supply of 450kV on- and offshore high-voltage cable, with parts of the cable kept as spare parts.

The replacement involved the manufacturing and jointing of cables, as well as the delivery of new terminations and the refurbishment of existing ones. NKT executive vice president for service and installation Axel Barnekow expressed satisfaction with the project, stating, “We are delighted to support TenneT in maintaining the reliability of the NorNed interconnector. Our expertise in delivering high-quality cable solutions ensures that the transmission system remains robust and efficient.”

The NorNed interconnector has been connecting the electrical grids of Norway and the Netherlands since 2008. Running from Feda in Norway to Eemshaven in the Netherlands, the 450kV high-voltage interconnector is 580km long and has a capacity of up to 700MW. TenneT and Statnett are the joint owners of the HVDC offshore link.

This project underscores the importance of maintaining and upgrading energy infrastructure to support the energy transition and ensure transmission security. As Europe continues to integrate more renewable energy sources into its grid, the role of interconnectors like NorNed will become increasingly significant. The successful completion of this project sets a precedent for future upgrades and replacements, highlighting the need for continued investment in high-voltage cable technology and expertise.
