Plenitude, the renewable energy arm of Italian energy giant Eni, has broken ground on its latest solar venture in Andalusia, Spain. The 200MW Entrenúcleos solar project, straddling Dos Hermanas and Coria del Río in Seville, is set to become a significant player in Spain’s renewable energy landscape, with operations expected to commence in 2026.
The solar park, consisting of four plants—Granville, Killington, Plumlee, and Rickwood—will house 326,000 solar panels spread across more than 300 hectares. Each plant will boast a capacity of 50 megawatts peak, collectively generating over 435 gigawatt hours annually once fully operational. The project’s connection to the grid will be facilitated through the Entrenúcleos SET substation, shared with another developer, and subsequently linked to the national grid via Red Eléctrica Española (REE) substation in Dos Hermanas.
Spanish company Solarig has been contracted to construct the solar park, with a notable commitment to sustainability. “Green steel”—recycled material with a zero-carbon footprint produced entirely within Spain—will be utilized for testing purposes during the development phase.
Mariangiola Mollicone, Plenitude Renewables Spain head of renewables in Western Europe and managing director, underscored the project’s significance. “Entrenúcleos is a landmark project for Plenitude—not only because it contributes to our growth objectives in Spain, but also because it reflects our deep and ongoing commitment to Andalusia, a region that plays a key role in the country’s renewable energy landscape,” she stated. With Entrenúcleos, Plenitude’s portfolio in Andalusia now stands at around 580MW under construction, alongside two other plants—Guillena at 230MW and Caparacena at 150MW.
Plenitude’s expansion strategy in Spain is evident, with 1.3GW already installed across regions including Extremadura, Galicia, and Catalonia. The company is developing additional projects totaling more than 2GW at various stages throughout the country.
The project’s inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives from the Energy Department of the Regional Ministry for Industry, Energy and Mining of the Government of Andalusia, as well as officials from the Dos Hermanas Town Council. Manuel Larrasa, General Secretary of the Energy Department, highlighted Andalusia’s potential in renewable energies. “Renewable energies are the oil that Andalusia never had; they are a golden opportunity for the economic and industrial growth of our land,” he remarked. Larrasa emphasized Andalusia’s advantage in Europe’s decarbonization process, citing the region’s abundant natural resources—sun, wind, and biomass—as key differentiators.
The Entrenúcleos solar project is poised to shape the development of Spain’s renewable energy sector, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. As Plenitude continues its expansion, the project serves as a testament to the growing investment and innovation in Spain’s renewable energy landscape, potentially influencing similar ventures and contributing to the country’s decarbonization goals.
