BC’s Wind Boom: 560MW in Indigenous-Led Projects by 2031

The energy landscape in British Columbia is about to get a significant boost, with three major wind projects set to commence commercial operations between 2030 and 2031. Innergex Renewable Energy, a key player in the renewable energy sector, has secured a trio of wind projects in BC Hydro’s latest request for proposals (RFP), with a combined gross capacity of 560MW. These projects are not just about generating clean energy; they are about forging strong partnerships and driving meaningful change.

The K2 project, located in BC’s central interior, is a joint venture between the Westbank First Nation and Innergex. With a 51% equity stake, the Westbank First Nation is not just a partner but a leading force in this 160MW project. Similarly, the Nithi Mountain wind project in the Bulkley-Nechako region and the Stewart Creek project in the Peace Region are developed in collaboration with the Stellat’en First Nation and the West Moberly First Nations, respectively. Each of these Indigenous communities holds a 51% equity stake, ensuring that the benefits of these projects are shared equitably.

Innergex’s president and CEO, Michel Letellier, underscored the significance of these partnerships. “We are proud that all three of our projects selected in BC Hydro’s RFP are built on strong partnerships with Indigenous communities,” he stated. This approach is not just about corporate social responsibility; it’s about creating lasting and meaningful benefits for these communities. It’s about ensuring that the energy transition is inclusive and equitable.

These projects are a testament to Innergex’s commitment to delivering competitive renewable energy projects. With a portfolio that includes interests in 89 operating facilities with an aggregate net installed capacity of 3.3GW, Innergex is a major player in the renewable energy sector. The company’s operations span Canada, the US, France, and Chile, demonstrating its global reach and expertise.

The selection of these projects in BC Hydro’s RFP is a significant milestone for Innergex and the renewable energy sector in British Columbia. It underscores the strength of Innergex’s development portfolio and its commitment to advancing the province’s energy transition. But it also raises important questions. How will these projects shape the future of renewable energy in British Columbia? What role will Indigenous partnerships play in the energy transition? And how will these projects contribute to the province’s climate goals?

As these projects move towards commercial operations, they will undoubtedly spark debate and discussion. They will challenge norms and push the boundaries of what’s possible in the renewable energy sector. And they will shape the future of energy in British Columbia. The energy transition is not just about generating clean energy; it’s about creating a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive future. These projects are a step in that direction.
