Dominican Republic’s 420MW Manzanillo Power Land Project to Boost Energy Efficiency

The Dominican Republic is set to welcome a significant boost in its energy infrastructure with the upcoming Manzanillo Power Land project, a 420MW combined cycle facility that promises to enhance energy efficiency and deliver clean, reliable, and cost-effective electricity. EthosEnergy has stepped into the spotlight, securing a multi-year contract to provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for this ambitious venture. The project, currently under construction in Pepillo Salcedo, Montecristi province, is slated to commence operations in the second half of 2025.

EthosEnergy’s vice-president of O&M business development, Luis Vintimilla, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Energia 2000, the project’s developer. “We are excited to partner with Energia 2000 as they look to bring reliable, secure energy to the Dominican Republic,” Vintimilla stated. The primary goals are clear: maximise plant availability, optimise performance, and ensure safe, long-term operation. This project is not just about generating power; it’s about setting new standards for energy efficiency in the region.

The Manzanillo Power Land project will leverage cutting-edge technology, including a Siemens Energy SGT6-8000H gas turbine and an SST6-3000 steam turbine. Strategically located within the Manzanillo Port development, the plant’s proximity to a natural gas terminal, reception pier, and breakwater underscores its logistical advantages. Energia 2000 chairman Jaime Santana Bonetti highlighted EthosEnergy’s proven experience and proactive approach to risk management as key factors in their selection. “Once operational, this new facility will reset the bar for state-of-the-art energy efficiency in Latin America and the Caribbean,” Bonetti asserted.

This development is part of a broader trend where private companies are taking the lead in enhancing energy infrastructure in emerging markets. The Dominican Republic, with its growing energy demands, stands to benefit significantly from this investment. The project’s success could serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives in the region, showcasing the potential of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable energy solutions.

Moreover, EthosEnergy’s recent foray into the Middle East with the Maisan combined cycle power plant in Iraq further underscores its expanding global footprint. The three-year O&M contract for the 850MW facility marks EthosEnergy’s first comprehensive third-party care, custody, and control agreement in the region. This contract, coupled with the joint venture in Iraq for a gas turbine component repair facility, signals EthosEnergy’s strategic expansion into new markets.

The implications for the energy sector are profound. As more countries seek to enhance their energy infrastructure, the demand for reliable O&M services will likely surge. Companies like EthosEnergy, with their proven track record and innovative approaches, are well-positioned to meet this demand. The Manzanillo Power Land project, with its focus on energy efficiency and clean power, could set a new benchmark for future energy projects in Latin America and beyond. The sector is watching closely, and the outcomes could reshape how we think about energy production and management in the 21st century.
