National Grid Ventures and TenneT Germany have embarked on a joint venture to explore the potential of GriffinLink, a pioneering 2GW multi-purpose interconnector (MPI) designed to link offshore wind generation between the UK and Germany. This initiative marks a significant step towards an integrated and flexible energy network, aiming to bolster energy security and affordability for both nations.
GriffinLink is poised to enhance market integration and security of supply across north-western Europe. By transmitting renewable electricity directly from generation sites to demand centres, the interconnector will optimise grid resources and improve the efficiency of renewable energy deployment. The project promises to reduce costs, minimise material requirements, and lessen environmental impacts and disruptions to coastal communities. As the first MPI of its kind in Europe, GriffinLink sets a precedent for cross-border energy security and stability.
Building on National Grid’s 7.8GW interconnector portfolio and TenneT Germany’s 23GW portfolio, GriffinLink is scheduled for operation by the late 2030s. This timeline aligns with the growing energy demands driven by electrification, decarbonisation, and the rise of data centres and AI applications. The development phase will involve extensive onshore and offshore studies, business case research, and socio-economic impact analysis, culminating in a final investment decision.
National Grid Ventures president Ben Wilson emphasised the project’s importance, stating, “We are proud to work with TenneT Germany on this groundbreaking project that will enhance the diversity and flexibility in our energy systems. MPIs like GriffinLink are important for maximising the efficient use of resources, reducing costs and minimising the impact on coastal communities. Projects like this are vital to delivering a more coordinated, offshore grid. We now need to see the frameworks to make this happen developed and deployed at pace.”
The announcement comes on the heels of National Grid’s selection of Sumitomo Electric Industries as the preferred bidder for the 2GW Sea Link project, highlighting the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing high-voltage direct current electricity transmission.
This development could reshape the energy sector by fostering greater collaboration between European nations, accelerating the transition to renewable energy, and setting new standards for cross-border energy infrastructure. The success of GriffinLink may inspire similar initiatives, ultimately contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
