Vestas has secured a significant turbine supply order from Brazilian renewable energy company Casa dos Ventos for the Dom Inocêncio wind complex, marking a notable development in Brazil’s wind energy sector. The project, located in the wind-rich south-central region of Piauí, will comprise 184 V150-4.5MW turbines, totaling 828MW of capacity. This order reinforces an eight-year collaboration between the two companies and is set to commence construction in 2026, with commissioning expected in 2028.
Under the agreement, Vestas will supply the turbines, oversee construction, and provide operation and maintenance services for 25 years as part of an active output management 5000 service contract. The project represents a substantial investment of over 5bn reais ($918.89m) and is poised to become one of the largest wind complexes in Brazil, capable of powering around two million homes.
The Dom Inocêncio project aims to bolster Brazil’s energy security, increase the share of renewable sources in the national energy portfolio, and promote socioeconomic development in Piauí. During its construction and operation, the project is anticipated to generate over 8,500 direct and indirect jobs, stimulate local supply chains, and deliver significant benefits to the surrounding region.
Lucas Araripe, executive director of Casa dos Ventos, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Vestas in delivering reliable and high-performance solutions for a project of this scale. He highlighted the commitment to expanding Brazil’s renewable energy matrix and driving the country’s energy transition while fostering socioeconomic growth in the region.
Eduardo Ricotta, president of Vestas Latin America, expressed pride in receiving Casa dos Ventos’ trust for such a significant project. He underscored Vestas’ shared ambition with Casa dos Ventos to develop projects that advance the energy transition, expand access to clean energy, and promote socioeconomic growth.
This development comes on the heels of Vestas signing four wind turbine supply contracts totaling 200MW across Germany and Italy last month. The Dom Inocêncio project is the first key development in Brazil’s wind sector since 2023, according to Vestas’ press release.
The project’s scale and scope are likely to influence future developments in Brazil’s wind energy sector, potentially attracting more investments and fostering further growth in renewable energy projects. The focus on job creation and local economic development could also set a precedent for future projects, emphasizing the broader societal benefits of renewable energy investments. As Brazil continues to diversify its energy mix, projects like Dom Inocêncio will play a crucial role in shaping the country’s energy landscape and contributing to its sustainable development goals.
