The energy landscape of the Gulf region is set for a significant transformation, as ACWA Power and Bapco Energies have inked a joint development agreement to construct a massive solar power facility in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. The project, targeting a generation capacity of up to 2.8 gigawatts (GW), will be integrated with large-scale battery energy storage, marking a bold step towards bolstering both countries’ clean energy ambitions.
The agreement, signed during the recent Saudi-Bahraini Coordination Council meeting, underscores the strengthening of bilateral ties and regional energy collaboration. The solar power plant, to be delivered in phases, will supply electricity to Bapco Energies’ load centre in Bahrain, supporting the kingdom’s national energy requirements and accelerating its transition to renewable energy.
Raad Al Saady, ACWA Power’s vice-chair and managing director, emphasized the project’s alignment with both nations’ long-term visions. “This joint agreement with Bapco Energies is a testament to the strong bilateral ties between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and our shared commitment to a sustainable and secure energy future,” Al Saady stated. He further highlighted the project’s role in advancing regional energy security and the shift to renewable power.
The initiative is part of Bapco Energies’ commitment to the Bahrain National Energy Strategy, which aims to diversify the national energy mix to include renewables and ensure secure and competitive access to energy. Mark Thomas, Bapco Energies group CEO, noted, “This agreement marks another important milestone in our journey towards energy diversification and regional collaboration.”
By facilitating cross-border clean energy flow, the joint development agreement is poised to deepen energy partnerships across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
