ACCIONA Energía has secured a significant foothold in the Philippines’ renewable energy sector, winning a 20-year power supply contract through the country’s Green Energy Auction Programme. The contract covers the full output of two projects: the 101MW Kalayaan 2 wind farm in Laguna, currently under construction, and the 180MWp Daanbantayan solar plant in Cebu, set to begin construction before the end of the year.
This award, granted in the fourth round of the Philippines Department of Energy’s auction, provides long-term stability for both projects. They are poised to contribute significantly to the country’s energy mix as it seeks to expand its renewable capacity. “This contract is a testament to our commitment to driving the energy transition in the Philippines,” said ACCIONA Energía’s CEO, Ignacio Galán. “We are proud to support the country’s ambitious renewable energy targets.”
Beyond these projects, ACCIONA Energía is advancing a pipeline of more than 2GW in the Philippines. The company has also restructured its partnerships in Southeast Asia to enhance its presence in key markets, including Thailand, where it manages substantial portfolios and plans further expansion.
The Philippines’ renewable energy sector has been gaining momentum, with the government aiming to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040. ACCIONA Energía’s investment and commitment to the region could accelerate this transition, setting a precedent for other international players.
Moreover, ACCIONA Energía’s recent announcement of a 1GWh battery energy storage system at its Malgarida solar complex in Chile’s Atacama Desert underscores the company’s innovative approach to energy storage, a critical component for renewable energy integration. This could pave the way for similar projects in the Philippines, further enhancing the country’s renewable energy capabilities.
As the Philippines continues to attract significant investments in renewable energy, the sector is likely to witness accelerated growth, increased competition, and technological advancements. ACCIONA Energía’s latest win could spark further interest from international investors, driving the country’s energy transition and contributing to its sustainable development goals.
