UAE’s Largest CCGT Plant, Fujairah F3, Begins Commercial Operations

The Fujairah F3 power project, a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, has commenced commercial operations, marking a significant milestone in the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) energy sector. Co-owned by Marubeni, Hokuriku Electric Power Company, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), and Mubadala Investment Company, the project is now supplying power to the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

With a generation capacity of 2,400MW, the Fujairah F3 project stands as the largest CCGT-based power plant in the UAE. The plant employs Mitsubishi Power’s advanced JAC-class gas turbine generators in a combined cycle configuration, enhancing its efficiency and output. The investment in the project is distributed among the partners, with Marubeni holding a 20.4% stake, TAQA owning 40%, Mubadala with 20%, and Hokuriku Electric Power holding 19.6%.

This project is a strategic addition to the UAE’s power sector, contributing to the country’s energy diversification efforts. As the UAE continues to invest in renewable energy sources like solar power, challenges remain in ensuring a stable energy supply during nighttime and meeting the need for rapid output adjustments. The Fujairah F3 project addresses these challenges by providing a reliable and flexible source of baseload power.

The commencement of commercial operations at Fujairah F3 underscores the UAE’s commitment to transitioning towards a more sustainable and diversified energy mix. This development is likely to influence the broader energy sector, encouraging further investment in advanced gas turbine technology and promoting the integration of renewable and low-carbon energy sources. As the UAE continues to balance its energy portfolio, projects like Fujairah F3 will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the country’s power sector.
