Cadeler has taken a significant step forward in its Asian expansion, securing a firm contract with Synera Renewable Energy for the transportation and installation of 35 Siemens Gamesa 14MW turbines at the 495MW Formosa 4 offshore wind farm in Taiwan. The contract, valued between €70–80 million, underscores Cadeler’s growing footprint in the Asia-Pacific region and its commitment to deploying cutting-edge technology in the offshore wind sector.
The project, set to commence in March 2028, will be executed by one of Cadeler’s new M-class wind turbine installation vessels. These vessels, designed for next-generation offshore wind farms, represent a leap in installation capacity and efficiency. The operations are expected to span approximately 150 days, contributing to the timely completion of the Formosa 4 wind farm, which is located 18–20km off the coast of Miaoli County. The turbines will be installed in water depths ranging from 57 to 64 meters across a 58km² site, showcasing the advanced capabilities of Cadeler’s vessels in handling deep-water installations.
Mikkel Gleerup, chief executive of Cadeler, highlighted the strategic importance of the project, stating, “This milestone project further anchors Cadeler’s strategic presence in the Asia-Pacific region. With an M-class vessel, we are bringing best-in-class technology to Taiwan’s shores, building a bridge between continents and the infrastructure for a cleaner tomorrow.” Gleerup’s comments reflect the broader industry trend of leveraging advanced technology to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, particularly in regions with high wind potential but challenging installation conditions.
The contract is part of a larger reservation agreement secured by Cadeler in 2024, which initially covered two projects in the region. While discussions on the second project remain ongoing, the firm contract with Synera Renewable Energy signals a tangible step toward solidifying Cadeler’s role in Taiwan’s burgeoning offshore wind sector. This development is likely to influence the broader market, as other players may follow suit in investing in advanced installation vessels to meet the growing demand for offshore wind energy.
Cadeler’s Taipei office is playing a pivotal role in expanding the company’s pipeline in the Asia-Pacific region. With two vessels already active in the area, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on the region’s offshore wind potential. The Formosa 4 project not only reinforces Cadeler’s commitment to the region but also sets a precedent for future collaborations in the offshore wind sector.
As the global push for renewable energy intensifies, projects like Formosa 4 highlight the critical role of advanced installation technology in overcoming the logistical challenges of offshore wind development. Cadeler’s involvement in this project could spur further innovation in the sector, as companies seek to deploy more efficient and cost-effective solutions for large-scale offshore wind farms. The success of this project may also encourage other developers to explore similar ventures in the Asia-Pacific region, further accelerating the transition to a cleaner energy future.
