Bruce Power, Candu Energy Extend Partnership to 2035

Bruce Power and Candu Energy, an AtkinsRéalis company, have extended their partnership with a renewed master services agreement (MSA) for the eight CANDU reactors at the Tiverton nuclear station in Ontario, Canada. This agreement, set to continue until 2035, encompasses potential future scopes of work valued at up to $1bn, contingent upon future contracting awards from Bruce Power. The MSA is expected to provide substantial economic and employment benefits throughout Ontario and across Canada, aligning with key objectives of supporting Canadian jobs and fostering economic growth.

The renewed MSA, developed collaboratively with Bruce Power, covers a comprehensive range of capabilities offered by Candu Energy for upcoming work packages not included in existing life extension contracts through the Shoreline Power Group joint venture. This includes reactor core engineering, tooling and robotics, parts supply, nuclear safety and licensing, project management and controls, outages, reactor programmes, and lifecycle management. The agreement aims to streamline future contract negotiations, focusing on cost and schedule delivery, and establishes enhanced governance, cybersecurity compliance, and communication protocols.

Bruce Power president and CEO Eric Chassard emphasized the agreement’s role in strengthening operational and project capabilities, supporting thousands of high-skilled jobs, and driving economic growth. “We continue to build on our strong track record of performance at Bruce Power in both operations and projects and will not lose sight of these building blocks that have made us successful,” Chassard stated.

AtkinsRéalis president and CEO Ian L Edwards highlighted the renewal as a testament to the strength of the relationship with Bruce Power and the confidence they place in their work as the steward of CANDU technology. “Our continued long-term support for their CANDU-powered station is critical to Ontario’s energy security and clean power goals. We look forward to many more years of collaboration together, building on the success of the prior MSA,” Edwards said.

The renewed MSA is expected to shape the development of the nuclear sector by fostering innovation, efficiency, and collaboration. It underscores the importance of long-term partnerships in supporting major infrastructure projects and ensuring energy security. The agreement also highlights the role of private-sector investments in driving economic growth and supporting high-skilled jobs in the nuclear industry.

As the nuclear sector continues to evolve, this renewed partnership between Bruce Power and Candu Energy sets a precedent for future collaborations, emphasizing the need for enhanced governance, cybersecurity compliance, and communication protocols. The agreement’s focus on streamlining contract negotiations and delivering cost-effective solutions is likely to influence how similar projects are managed in the future, shaping the trajectory of the nuclear energy sector in Canada and beyond.
