Islamic Azad University’s Pure Noise Method Revolutionizes Seismic Data Clarity

In the quest to enhance the accuracy of seismic data used for hydrocarbon exploration, researchers have developed an innovative approach to tackle a persistent challenge: electromagnetic (EM) noise from power grids. This noise, an inevitable byproduct of large-scale seismic projects, has long plagued the industry, often leading to compromised data quality. A recent study published in the journal *Discover Applied Sciences* introduces a novel method that promises to revolutionize EM noise attenuation, with significant implications for the energy sector.

The research, led by Mohammad Reza Gerivani from the Department of Petroleum, Materials and Mining Engineering at the Islamic Azad University, presents a groundbreaking concept termed “pure noise.” Unlike traditional frequency-based elimination methods, which often inadvertently affect the target signal, Gerivani’s approach focuses on recording and removing EM noise without compromising the seismic data.

“Our method involves designing a special EM receiver that records the EM noise simultaneously with the seismic data,” Gerivani explains. “By phase- and amplitude-correcting the recorded data and subtracting it from the raw data, we achieve denoised seismic data with remarkable accuracy.”

The study’s case study involved a 2D seismic line crossing two power lines operating at 230 and 132 kV. The results were impressive, with the error of denoising on the test data falling below 3%. Notably, the research highlighted the importance of the proper location of the EM receiver, as larger amplitudes recorded by the receivers were associated with smaller errors.

The implications of this research for the energy sector are profound. Accurate seismic data is crucial for effective hydrocarbon exploration, and the ability to remove EM noise without affecting the target signal can significantly enhance the reliability of seismic surveys.
