Envision Energy’s Two-Blade Turbine Revolutionizes Wind Power

A Chinese green technology company, Envision Energy, has announced a significant milestone in wind turbine technology, potentially reshaping the sector’s future. The company’s two-blade onshore turbine prototype has achieved over 500 days of stable operation, demonstrating an availability rate of 99.3% and running for an average of 2,444 hours without interruption. The turbine produced electricity at full power for around 3,048 hours per year, equivalent to a traditional three-blade turbine.

Envision Energy claims that its field performance confirms the two-blade turbine’s parity with traditional three-blade machines operating at the same site. This breakthrough builds upon the company’s 2012 development of a 3.6MW offshore two-blade turbine at its Global Innovation Centre in Denmark. Since its installation in 2013, the offshore turbine has accumulated significant product development and operational know-how, laying the groundwork for the new-generation two-blade turbines.

The latest onshore turbine development underwent months of rigorous testing and nearly two years of real-world field operation at Envision’s smart wind power verification centre. Lou Yimin, Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer at Envision Energy, highlighted the achievement: “By overcoming key technical challenges such as excessive system vibration and load imbalance – barriers that have long held back two-blade designs, Envision has once again redefined wind power innovation by becoming the first in the industry to demonstrate long-term operational verification of a next-generation two-blade turbine.”

This development could significantly impact the wind energy sector. Two-blade turbines have long been considered less efficient and more prone to technical issues than their three-blade counterparts.
