Italy’s Pioneering CCUS-WtE Project Aims for Negative CO2 Emissions

In a groundbreaking move for the energy sector, a collaborative research project in Italy is set to pioneer the first application of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in a Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant. This initiative, a joint effort between A2A SpA, Acinque Ambiente Srl, and the “Group on Advanced Separation Processes & GAS Processing” (GASP) of Politecnico di Milano, aims to install and operate a CCUS plant at a WtE facility in Como, Italy. The research, led by Laura A. Pellegrini, focuses on removing CO2 from incinerator flue gas using chemical absorption with an amine-based solvent, a process that could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to decarbonization efforts.

The project is part of A2A SpA’s broader strategy to meet its decarbonization targets, addressing the growing environmental impact of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and the CO2 emissions from human activities. Processing MSW in WtE plants not only manages waste recovery but also produces energy, avoiding the use of fossil fuels. For WtE plants handling MSW with a significant biogenic component, CCUS can pave the way for negative CO2 emissions, a critical step in combating climate change.

“The design has been carried out by optimizing the main process parameters and by estimating the energy requirements considering the specificities of the flue gas to be treated, which contains about 7 mol % CO2,” Pellegrini explained. This meticulous approach ensures that the pilot plant, planned for installation in the coming years, will be both efficient and effective in capturing CO2 from the flue gas.

The research, published in the English-language journal “Chemical Engineering Transactions,” highlights the potential commercial impacts for the energy sector.
