Bulgarian Breakthrough: Strategic EV Charging Model Decarbonizes Transport

In a significant stride towards decarbonizing transport, researchers from the University of National and World Economy in Bulgaria have developed a model for building a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) along the country’s republican highway network. This research, published in the “Collection of Scientific Papers New Economy,” offers a multidisciplinary approach to upgrading the transport sector and ensuring energy resource accessibility.

The lead author, Borislav Stefanov Arnaudov from the Faculty of Infrastructure, Department of Economics of Transport and Energy, emphasizes the importance of strategic planning in EV infrastructure development. “The reduction of harmful emissions on a global scale requires the mobility industry to simultaneously invest in and study low-carbon energy technology and infrastructure,” Arnaudov states. His research focuses on determining the optimal locations for charging stations, considering battery capacity and charging times.

The model calculates the average distance from a starting point to the nearest charging station, factoring in battery capacity and the amount of energy that can be charged within a 30-40 minute range. This approach aims to ensure that EV users can travel long distances without range anxiety, a critical barrier to widespread EV adoption.
