An incident at the onshore substation for RWE’s under-construction Thor wind farm in the Danish North Sea has drawn the attention of local authorities, with reports of vandalism surfacing in local media. The developer, RWE, has confirmed the incident but is refraining from speculation until the investigation concludes.
“We can confirm that an incident took place at the construction site of Siemens Energy for the Thor onshore substation in Lemvig, Denmark,” an RWE spokesperson stated. “The Danish police have started an investigation, which we of course are fully supporting. Please understand that we are not speculating and are awaiting the outcome of this investigation.”
Local media outlet TV Midtvest reported that the incident is believed to have occurred on Wednesday, July 16, with police responding to a report of vandalism. The Danish police have been contacted for further comment.
The Thor wind farm, consisting of 72 turbines, is currently under construction, with offshore foundation installation at the halfway stage. The project is scheduled to come online in 2027.
This incident raises questions about the security of renewable energy infrastructure and the potential impact of such disruptions on project timelines and costs. As the energy transition accelerates, ensuring the safety and security of these critical projects becomes increasingly important. The outcome of this investigation may shed light on emerging challenges in the sector and prompt discussions on how to mitigate risks in the future.
