Ørsted Secures Teesworks Site for Hornsea 3 Wind Farm Hub

Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm has taken a significant step in its development by securing a lease for up to 300,000 square metres at Steel River Quay, part of the Teesworks site on the River Tees. This move underscores the company’s commitment to British infrastructure and the green industrial transition, with the site set to serve as a crucial logistics hub for monopile foundations and secondary steel components.

Each monopile, weighing over 2,300 tonnes—equivalent to Nelson’s Column—highlights the scale of the operations. Jason Ledden, Senior Project Director for Hornsea 3, emphasised the strategic importance of this decision: “Ørsted’s choice of Steel River Quay at Teesworks for Hornsea 3 demonstrates our continued commitment to investing in British infrastructure, growth and jobs.”

Hornsea 3, which will power millions of homes with clean energy, is poised to support economic regeneration in Teesside. The project will create jobs and attract investment in the offshore wind sector. The site’s proximity to key supply chain partners like Severfield and SeAH, along with access to installation vessels via Cadeler, enhances its strategic value.

Ally Cameron, Managing Director at Steel River Quay, noted the broader impact: “This partnership will not only deliver clean energy infrastructure for the UK but also drive jobs, investment and opportunity for our region.” Chris Musgrave OBE, Teesworks Ltd Chairman, added, “This is exactly the kind of transformational project we envisaged when we began regenerating this site.”

As the UK accelerates its net zero journey, the Hornsea 3 and Teesworks partnership represents a pivotal step in aligning energy security, industrial growth, and emissions reduction. This development could set a precedent for future offshore wind projects, demonstrating how regional regeneration and green energy goals can intersect to drive sustainable economic growth. The collaboration between Ørsted and Teesworks may inspire similar initiatives, fostering a more resilient and diversified energy sector.
