Scotland’s Grangemouth industrial hub is stepping into the spotlight as the country’s clean energy transformation gains momentum. The launch of the Grangemouth Industrial Just Transition Plan marks a significant stride towards a low-carbon economy, with a focus on attracting investment, creating skilled jobs, and ensuring a fair shift for workers and communities.
The plan, a first-of-its-kind regional just transition strategy, outlines 21 key actions developed in partnership with the Grangemouth Future Industry Board, industry stakeholders, workers, community leaders, and government. At its core, the strategy aims to secure a sustainable future for the region’s economy while aligning with Scotland’s net zero goals.
A £25 million Just Transition Fund will support existing businesses and attract new investment, while a comprehensive industrial skills programme will equip the workforce for the transition. An industry-led decarbonisation and investment strategy will guide the shift towards cleaner energy, and a new Grangemouth Regulatory Hub will support more efficient, sustainable operations.
Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Climate Action and Energy Gillian Martin underscored the significance of Grangemouth’s role, stating, “As Scotland’s leading industrial cluster, Grangemouth has long played a vital role in our economy and bringing energy security to the country. It is only right that the area continues to help lead the way in our journey to clean, green energy.”
Forth Valley College Principal Kenny MacInnes highlighted the educational institution’s commitment, noting, “Our flagship £4 million Skills Transition Centre will drive innovation in skills delivery, promote inclusive growth, and align closely with evolving industry needs.” He also reaffirmed the College’s support for Petroineos employees following the refinery closure.
The Grangemouth Industrial Just Transition Plan sets a precedent for other regions, demonstrating how collaboration between industry, government, and communities can drive meaningful change. As Scotland accelerates its clean energy transition, the lessons learned from Grangemouth could shape the development of similar strategies across the UK and beyond. The plan’s success will hinge on its ability to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility, ensuring that no one is left behind in the shift to a low-carbon future.
