Idaho’s Largest Solar Plant Powers Up in Ada County

The sun has officially begun to shine brighter on Idaho’s energy landscape with the commissioning of Pleasant Valley Solar 1, a monumental solar power generation facility nestled in Ada County. This isn’t just another solar project; it’s a testament to what collaboration and foresight can achieve in the renewable energy sector. With a capacity of 200 megawatts alternating current (MWac) and 261 megawatts defined conditions (MWdc), it’s now the largest operational solar facility within Idaho Power’s system, a significant milestone that could reshape the state’s energy dynamics.

The project, a joint effort between Matrix Renewables and rPlus Energies, is more than just numbers on a spec sheet. It’s a power purchase agreement (PPA) secured through a strategic collaboration with Meta and Idaho Power, facilitated by an energy services agreement. This isn’t just about generating solar power; it’s about creating a sustainable energy ecosystem that benefits all parties involved.

Matrix Renewables’ managing director and US head, Cindy Tindell, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to celebrate the commissioning of the Pleasant Valley solar project. This achievement underscores our commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure and contributing to local communities. We are grateful for the collaborative efforts of our partners, offtakers, financiers and the supporting community who made this project possible.” This sentiment underscores the importance of partnerships in driving renewable energy projects forward.

The construction of Pleasant Valley Solar 1 was completed on 2 March 2025 by Sundt Renewables, with 220 workers contributing to the effort. This isn’t just about building a solar farm; it’s about creating jobs and stimulating local economies. rPlus Energies president and CEO, Luigi Resta, echoed this sentiment, saying, “We are proud to see Pleasant Valley Solar come to life. We started developing this project in 2021 and it’s especially meaningful for us as Ada County is home to one of our two offices, allowing us to connect with the local community in a deeper way.”

But the story doesn’t end with Pleasant Valley Solar 1. rPlus Energies is already looking ahead, developing an expansion of the project, dubbed Pleasant Valley Solar 2. With a capacity of 125MWac/162MWdc, this project, for which a PPA with Idaho Power and Meta was signed in November 2024, promises to further bolster Idaho’s renewable energy infrastructure. Both projects will provide renewable energy to Idaho Power’s grid and assist Meta in operating its data centre in Kuna, Idaho, using 100% renewable energy. This is a significant step towards decarbonizing data centres, a sector often criticized for its energy-intensive operations.

The commissioning of Pleasant Valley Solar 1 and the development of its expansion are more than just business as usual. They are a challenge to the status quo, a spark to ignite debate, and a catalyst for change. They raise questions about the role of corporate partnerships in driving renewable energy projects, the importance of community engagement, and the potential of solar power in transforming energy landscapes. As the sun sets on traditional energy sources, projects like these light the way towards a more sustainable future. The energy sector is watching, and the future looks bright.
