Türkiye Eyes 50 GW Wind Power Surge by 2035

Türkiye is on the cusp of a wind energy revolution, with ambitious targets and significant potential that could reshape the country’s energy landscape and attract substantial investment. According to a recent study published in ‘Heliyon’ by Haci Sogukpinar, from the Department of Electric and Energy at the University of Adiyaman, Türkiye aims to install 120 GW of wind and solar energy by 2035, with a significant portion dedicated to wind power.

The study highlights that Türkiye has set its sights on achieving 55% renewable energy by 2035, aligning with the European Union Green Deal. To meet this goal, the country plans to invest 5 GW in wind energy annually, bringing the total installed wind capacity to 50 GW by 2035. This translates to an impressive 138 TW-hours of wind-generated electricity per year, a figure that underscores the scale of the transformation underway.

Currently, Türkiye’s installed wind power capacity stands at 13 GW, with new installations progressing rapidly. The country’s wind energy potential is vast, with 118,683 MWe identified for wind speeds over 6.8 m/s at a height of 50 m. For regions with wind speeds exceeding 7 m/s, the total wind energy potential is 48,000 MWe. Additionally, the offshore wind potential is estimated at 17,393 MWe, with preparations for offshore wind power plants already underway. By 2035, Türkiye aims to install 5,000 MWe of offshore wind capacity.

Sogukpinar emphasizes the strategic importance of these targets, stating, “Achieving these goals will not only enhance Türkiye’s energy security but also position the country as a key player in the global renewable energy market.” He further notes, “The rapid growth in wind energy installations will drive significant commercial opportunities, attracting investments and fostering technological advancements in the sector.”

The study’s findings suggest that Türkiye’s wind energy future is bright, with substantial potential for both onshore and offshore developments. The country’s commitment to renewable energy aligns with global trends and positions it as a leader in the region. As Sogukpinar points out, “The policies and investments in wind energy will not only meet the growing demand for clean energy but also stimulate economic growth and create jobs.”

The research published in ‘Heliyon’ provides a comprehensive overview of Türkiye’s wind energy potential, the evolution of its installations, and the policies driving this growth. It offers valuable insights into how the country can achieve its ambitious targets and highlights the commercial impacts for the energy sector. As Türkiye continues to invest in wind energy, the sector can expect significant growth, technological innovation, and increased market opportunities.
