Natural Power Launches EchoSense to Boost Wind Energy and Protect Bats

Natural Power has made a significant move in the renewable energy sector with the launch of EchoSense, a smart turbine curtailment technology designed specifically to minimize bat collisions at wind farms. This initiative is not just a win for wildlife conservation; it also addresses a pressing issue in the wind energy industry: energy loss. The traditional blanket curtailment strategy, while effective in reducing bat fatalities, comes at a steep price in terms of lost energy production. EchoSense flips the script by allowing wind farms to operate more efficiently while still protecting bat populations.

Kevin Denman, the managing director and commercial lead for this project, emphasizes the importance of this development. “The formation of EchoSense, LLC is an exciting next step in the growth of EchoSense,” he stated. He recognizes that the market is clamoring for advanced curtailment solutions, and EchoSense is tailored to meet that demand. By spinning off this technology into its own entity, Natural Power is positioning itself to better serve clients who are increasingly aware of the unique challenges associated with wildlife protection in wind energy operations.

What sets EchoSense apart is its dual approach to conservation and efficiency. Multiple studies have affirmed its efficacy as a cost-effective alternative to blanket curtailment strategies. Denman pointed out that this technology has been tested thoroughly in commercial operations permitted by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, showcasing its ability to protect bat populations while significantly reducing energy losses. In fact, EchoSense can reclaim approximately 40-60% of energy production that would otherwise be lost under traditional methods.

The technology itself is sophisticated yet user-friendly. It comprises a detection subsystem that gathers bat acoustic and environmental data, paired with a decision subsystem that processes this information against a set of predetermined rules. This allows for real-time curtailment commands to be issued to individual turbines based on actual bat activity, rather than a blanket approach that indiscriminately reduces output across the board. The ability to aggregate bat presence site-wide or by predefined zones offers a tailored solution that optimizes for both bat activity and the unique habitat needs of individual sites.

Durability and security are also at the forefront of EchoSense’s design. The components are built to last, and the system adheres to stringent NERC CIP compliance for network security, ensuring that it can operate safely and effectively in the field. Furthermore, the technology can assist in collecting acoustic data if it’s not already available, making it a versatile tool for wind farm operators.
