New Method Revolutionizes Loss Allocation in Advanced Power Grids

In a significant advancement for the energy sector, researchers have introduced a cutting-edge method for loss allocation in power grids that integrate distributed generation. This innovative approach, detailed in a recent study published in the ‘International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems’, promises to optimize the economic operation of power grids by ensuring a fair distribution of network losses among users.

Lead author Wenqiang Tao from the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Wuhan University emphasizes the importance of this research, stating, “Fair allocation of network losses not only enhances resource efficiency but also supports the sustainable operation of power grids.” The method leverages graph theory and an arbitrary segmentation technique to tackle the complexities of modern power networks, especially as they increasingly incorporate renewable energy sources like solar and wind.

The paper outlines a theoretical framework that calculates network loss improvements by utilizing bus voltage equations and a novel PQ-PV subnetwork disassembly method. This addresses the challenges posed by bidirectional power flows that are characteristic of distributed generation systems. Additionally, the researchers have developed a mechanism to identify and correct abnormal network loss measurement data, which is critical for maintaining accurate operational metrics in power grids.

One of the standout features of this research is its application to two distinct network structures: the well-known IEEE 14-bus transmission system and an NC-10 kV distribution network. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can be effectively applied across various grid types, making it a versatile tool for energy providers. “By simplifying the network into manageable regions, we can allocate losses more accurately, which ultimately leads to better financial outcomes for all stakeholders involved,” Tao explains.
