Noida International University Research Enhances Solar Integration in Smart Grids

The integration of solar power into smart grids has long been a complex challenge due to the unpredictable nature of solar energy. However, a recent study led by Deepak Singh from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Noida International University is turning the tide with innovative adaptive control strategies using reinforcement learning (RL). This research, published in “Energy Storage and Saving,” highlights the potential for significant advancements in how renewable energy sources can be managed and optimized within smart grid frameworks.

Singh and his team utilized a Deep Q-Network algorithm to create a custom environment for real-time simulations of grid operations, incorporating real-time data on solar power generation, weather conditions, and various grid metrics. “Our approach allows us to predict and adapt to the fluctuating nature of solar energy more effectively than traditional methods,” Singh explained. The results were impressive, with the trained RL agent achieving an R-squared value of 0.886 and a mean average error of approximately 1.17 million watt-hours. These metrics indicate a high level of predictability in load distribution and battery management, essential for maintaining grid stability.

This research is particularly relevant as the global energy sector increasingly shifts towards renewable sources. The ability to accurately forecast solar power generation and manage energy distribution can lead to more resilient energy systems and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
