Universitas Malikussaleh Develops Smart IoT System to Boost Solar Efficiency

In a significant advancement for the renewable energy sector, researchers from Universitas Malikussaleh have unveiled a novel system for monitoring solar power plants using the Node MCU ESP8266, a microcontroller that has gained traction in the Internet of Things (IoT) landscape. This innovative approach not only enhances the efficiency of solar energy production but also promises to reshape how energy firms manage and optimize their operations.

Fitrah Hasan Limbong, the lead author of the study published in the Journal Geuthee of Engineering and Energy, emphasized the critical role of real-time monitoring in the renewable energy sector. “Monitoring is essential for the continuous improvement of solar power plants. It allows operators to make informed decisions based on accurate data,” Limbong stated. The research highlights how IoT technology can facilitate this process, enabling users to track performance metrics through a dedicated website interface.

The monitoring system, referred to as the Box Panel, is designed to measure key electrical parameters such as output current and voltage. This real-time data collection is not merely an academic exercise; it holds substantial commercial implications. By providing operators with immediate insights into their solar power systems, the Box Panel can help reduce downtime and enhance energy production efficiency. This is particularly crucial as the global energy market increasingly shifts towards sustainable sources, and companies seek to maximize their return on investment in solar technology.

Functional testing of the system was meticulously carried out, focusing on voltage and current sensors, as well as the NodeMCU itself. The results were promising, confirming that the Box Panel functions effectively and can relay crucial information back to users in real time. “Once this system is fully operational, it will empower solar power operators to respond swiftly to any issues, ensuring that their plants run at peak performance,” Limbong noted.
