Latin America’s Geothermal Potential Shines Amid Volcanic Activity Surge

A recent study published in “Geothermal Energy” highlights the untapped geothermal potential in Latin America, driven by the region’s active volcanic activity along the Pacific Rim. The research, led by Octavio Castillo-Reyes from the Department of Computer Architecture at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC), underscores the growing importance of geothermal power as a sustainable energy source in the global transition to green energy.

Latin America currently contributes approximately 11% of the world’s geothermal electricity production, translating to around 16 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity. Mexico stands out as the leading producer in the region and ranks sixth globally. Castillo-Reyes emphasizes the significance of this resource, stating, “Geothermal power is a promising alternative that can help meet the energy demands of sustainable societies.”

The study outlines the installed capacity of geothermal electricity generation in key Latin American countries, revealing both the current state and the potential for future production. Despite this promise, the research identifies multiple challenges that hinder the broader development and exploitation of geothermal resources. These challenges include technical limitations and the need for improved exploration methods.

One innovative approach discussed in the paper is the use of electromagnetic imaging technologies, which can enhance the exploration of geothermal resources. Traditional exploration techniques often fall short in accurately identifying viable geothermal sites, leading to inefficiencies and increased costs. Castillo-Reyes notes, “The integration of electromagnetic imaging technologies provides a more effective means to explore geothermal potential, offering a clearer understanding of subsurface conditions.”

The article also presents recent case studies from Mexico that showcase the successful application of these advanced technologies. These examples highlight best practices and lessons learned, providing valuable insights for future geothermal projects in the region.
