In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly integrated into everyday life, influencing various sectors, including energy. A recent study by Ferdinand Lisaldy from Universitas Bung Karno highlights the urgent need for a robust governance framework for AI, particularly in Indonesia. As AI innovations proliferate, from navigation tools to advanced medical devices, the potential for legal and ethical dilemmas grows.
Lisaldy’s research underscores that traditional legal frameworks may not suffice for the unique challenges posed by AI. He introduces the concept of “Lex Artificial Intelligence,” or lex AI, as a tailored governance model that recognizes the dynamic and complex nature of AI systems. “AI fundamentally differs from coding programs in that it is a dynamic system consisting of a network of algorithms that mimic biological neural networks,” Lisaldy explains. This distinction necessitates a governance approach that is not merely an extension of existing laws but rather a new framework that can coexist and complement them.
For the energy sector, the implications of establishing lex AI are significant. As AI technologies are increasingly applied to optimize energy production, distribution, and consumption, ensuring that these systems operate within a legally sound framework is crucial. For instance, AI can enhance grid management, predict energy demands, and even facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. However, without proper governance, issues such as data privacy, accountability for AI decisions, and ethical use of AI in energy management could arise.
Lisaldy emphasizes that “a different approach and governance system are required” to address these challenges effectively. The introduction of lex AI could provide a structured way to navigate the complexities of AI in energy, potentially leading to innovations that improve efficiency and sustainability while safeguarding consumer rights.
As the energy sector continues to adopt AI technologies, the establishment of lex AI could open up new commercial opportunities, allowing companies to innovate with confidence in a regulated environment. By addressing the legal and ethical implications of AI, Indonesia can position itself as a leader in responsible AI governance, ultimately benefiting both the economy and society.
This study was published in ‘DiH,’ which translates to ‘Law and Society,’ reinforcing the importance of aligning legal frameworks with technological advancements. The findings present a timely call to action for policymakers and industry leaders to engage in discussions about AI governance, ensuring that the benefits of AI are realized while minimizing potential risks.
