Ukraine’s Solar Potential Soars with New Study Revealing 369 TWh Capacity

A recent study led by Karpchuk Hanna from the Department of Renewable Energy Sources at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has unveiled significant insights into the potential of solar energy in Ukraine. Published in the journal EPJ Photovoltaics, the research focuses on enhancing methodologies for calculating the technical-achievable potential of photovoltaic (PV) systems in the country.

The study emphasizes the importance of considering local conditions and the specific characteristics of urban environments when identifying suitable areas for photovoltaic installations. By refining existing calculation methods, the research has determined that the technically achievable potential for solar energy conversion in Ukraine is an impressive 369 terawatt-hours per year, equivalent to 254 gigawatts of direct current power. This figure is more than double the estimates provided by previous methodologies, indicating a vast untapped opportunity for solar energy development.

Karpchuk notes, “The refinement of the PV panels and PV station area ratio calculations revealed that its value depends on the type and power of the station, varying from 0 to 1.” This insight simplifies the process of determining how much power capacity can be installed in a given area, making it easier for developers to plan and implement new solar projects.

The implications of this research are particularly significant given the current energy challenges faced by Ukraine. With many traditional power plants damaged or destroyed due to ongoing conflict, the need for alternative energy sources has never been more critical.
