New Review Highlights Economic and Environmental Impacts of Energy Sources

A recent review conducted by Faisal Al Mubarak from the WA School of Mines at Curtin University has shed light on the economic, societal, and environmental impacts of various energy sources. This comprehensive analysis, published in the journal ‘Engineering’, highlights the critical need for a balanced approach to energy production that considers both the benefits and drawbacks of different energy sources.

The review evaluates nine energy sources: fossil fuels, geothermal, biomass, solar, wind, hydropower, ocean, nuclear, and hydrogen. A key takeaway from the research is the varying levelized cost of energy (LCOE) across these sources, which significantly influences their commercial viability. Al Mubarak notes, “Nuclear energy has the lowest LCOE range, whereas ocean energy has the highest,” indicating that while some energy sources are more cost-effective, others may require additional investment to become commercially viable.

Fossil fuels, despite their substantial societal impacts, provide considerable economic benefits, including job creation and tax revenue. However, they also present significant health risks and environmental concerns, particularly due to greenhouse gas emissions. The review found that fossil fuels generate the highest emissions, while renewable sources like solar and wind have a much lower environmental footprint and are increasingly contributing to job creation globally.

The analysis reveals that transitioning away from high carbon-emitting energy sources is not only essential for environmental sustainability but also presents opportunities for economic growth. Al Mubarak emphasizes the urgency of this transition, stating, “There is an urgent need to move away from large-carbon-footprint processes, particularly fossil fuels without carbon capture.”

Moreover, the study highlights the importance of resource management in energy production. Renewable energy sources require substantial materials for construction, and the lack of recycling in current solar and wind installations poses a challenge. This opens up avenues for innovation in material sourcing and recycling technologies, which could enhance the sustainability of these energy solutions.
