Recent research published in Heliyon has unveiled the potential of pink lotus essential oil (PLO) as a neuroprotective agent against epilepsy, particularly in cases induced by kainic acid (KA). Conducted by Ratchaniporn Kongsui from the Division of Physiology at the University of Phayao in Thailand, this study highlights how PLO can mitigate oxidative stress and neuronal cell death, which are critical factors in the progression of epilepsy.
In the study, mice were administered PLO at two different doses—100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg—before and after KA injection, an established method to induce seizures and neurodegeneration. The results were promising: treatment with PLO not only reduced seizure severity but also enhanced antioxidant activities within the brain. Specifically, levels of glutathione (GSH) and catalase (CAT) were increased, while malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress, was decreased. Kongsui noted, “PLO possesses antiepileptic, anti-apoptotic, and neuroprotective effects on KA-induced epileptogenesis,” suggesting its potential as a therapeutic option.
The research also revealed that PLO treatment significantly reduced neuronal cell death in critical areas of the hippocampus, such as the CA1 and CA3 subfields, which are vital for memory and learning. The study attributed these protective effects to the activation of the Akt signaling pathway and an increase in reactive astrogliosis, a response that supports neuronal survival. Additionally, the expression of caspase-3, a key player in the apoptosis process, was notably decreased following PLO treatment.
