New Study Projects Electric Vehicle Adoption Surge by 2050

A recent study published in ‘Scientific Data’ presents a comprehensive dataset on electric road mobility, projecting the future of electric vehicle (EV) adoption through to 2050. Led by Irvylle Cavalcante from INESC-ID, the research highlights the critical factors influencing the rise of electric vehicles, including technological advancements, regulatory frameworks, and consumer behavior.

As countries strive for carbon neutrality by 2050, the adoption of EVs is expected to surge significantly. However, predicting this growth is complex. The study addresses this challenge by presenting various scenarios for EV penetration across different regions, including the World, Europe, and specific countries like Portugal, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia. This data is vital for stakeholders in the energy sector, as it outlines potential market dynamics and infrastructure needs.

Cavalcante emphasizes the importance of this dataset, stating, “The gathered data addresses different horizon times regarding EV penetration, providing a critical input for further work on EV mass deployment.” This insight is particularly relevant for energy companies looking to invest in charging infrastructure and renewable energy sources to support the increasing demand for electricity from EVs.
