Off-Grid Solar Solutions Shine in Dera Ghazi Khan’s Energy Challenges

A recent study published in the journal Heliyon has spotlighted the potential of off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to electrify remote areas in Dera Ghazi Khan, Pakistan. Led by Li Bin from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at North China Electric Power University, the research addresses the growing electricity demand driven by rapid population growth and highlights the need for sustainable energy solutions.

Dera Ghazi Khan, like many rural regions, struggles with unreliable access to grid power. This study proposes that installing solar PV systems can provide a dependable electricity source, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and significantly enhancing living conditions. The researchers conducted a techno-economic analysis using the PVsyst 7.2 simulation software, focusing on the village of Roonghan, where essential facilities such as hospitals, shops, and homes currently face energy challenges.

One of the key findings of the study is the stark cost comparison between traditional grid electricity and off-grid solar solutions. The analysis revealed that while connecting to the national grid would cost approximately $26.98 crore, implementing an off-grid solar PV system would only require about $2.16 crore. “The economic viability shows that installing off-grid solar PV in DG Khan is much cheaper,” said Li Bin, emphasizing the financial advantages of renewable energy in these remote areas.

Moreover, the integration of Battery Energy Storage (BES) with Renewable Energy Sources (RES) was found to further enhance the system’s efficiency. This combination could lead to a 5% reduction in annual energy costs and improve self-sufficiency, making it a compelling option for rural electrification.

The implications of this research extend beyond Dera Ghazi Khan. By demonstrating the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of off-grid solar PV systems, it offers a model that can be replicated in other remote regions facing similar energy challenges. Policymakers and energy sector stakeholders can leverage these insights to drive investments in renewable energy infrastructure, fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability.
