Algeria’s Solar Power Plant Study Highlights Future of Renewable Energy

A recent study published in the “Review of Renewable Energies” highlights the efficiency of a solar photovoltaic power plant in Algeria, shedding light on the growing importance of renewable energy sources in emerging economies. Led by Yassine Bouroumeid from the Intelligent Control and Electrical Power System (ICEPS) at Djilali Liabes University of Sidi Bel Abbes, the research focuses on a 12 MW solar power plant located in Sidi Bel Abbès, which has emerged as one of the largest in the country.

The study emphasizes the critical role of photovoltaic systems in addressing energy security concerns, particularly in regions with increasing energy demands. With a mean solar radiation of 5.21 kilowatt-hours per square meter per day and an average yearly temperature of 18.9 degrees Celsius, the site is well-positioned to harness solar energy effectively. Bouroumeid notes, “The analysis of the performance of these network-connected centrals can enhance the design, operation, and maintenance of new systems.” This insight is particularly valuable as countries seek to optimize their renewable energy infrastructure.

One of the key aspects of the research is the comparison between the actual performance of the Sidi Bel Abbès power plant and simulated values generated by the SolarGis PvPlanner program. This analysis allows for the identification of discrepancies and areas for improvement, which can lead to more efficient solar projects in the future. Bouroumeid states, “Analysis of real-world performance in relation to simulations allows for the detection of inconsistencies and the enhancement of future initiatives.” This kind of data-driven approach is essential for ensuring that solar installations can meet energy demands reliably.
