Recent research led by Amany A. El-Sahn from the Poultry Breeding Research Department at the Animal Production Research Institute in Giza, Egypt, has revealed promising findings on the use of lemongrass extract to enhance the health and productivity of broiler chickens. Published in the journal Heliyon, this study highlights the potential of lemongrass as a natural growth promoter, offering a sustainable alternative to antibiotics in poultry farming.
The study involved 201 one-day-old male broiler chicks, which were divided into four groups. While one group served as a control and received no lemongrass extract, the other three groups were given varying concentrations of lemongrass aqueous extract in their drinking water. The results indicated that the groups receiving 100 ml/l and 200 ml/l of lemongrass extract showed significant improvements in key growth performance metrics, such as body weight and feed conversion ratio, compared to the control group.
El-Sahn noted, “The administration of lemongrass aqueous extract can enhance productive performance, blood biomarkers, immunity, and gut health of broilers.” This statement underscores the extract’s multifaceted benefits, which extend beyond mere growth enhancement. The study found that birds receiving lemongrass extract exhibited better blood profiles, including higher levels of hemoglobin and lymphocytes, which are vital indicators of immune function.
Moreover, the research highlighted the extract’s role in reducing harmful intestinal pathogens like E. coli and Salmonella, which are critical concerns in poultry health and food safety. The findings suggest that lemongrass not only promotes growth but also supports overall gut health, making it a valuable addition to broiler diets.
From a commercial perspective, these findings open up new avenues for poultry producers looking to improve the health and productivity of their flocks while addressing the growing concerns over antibiotic resistance. With increasing regulatory pressures and consumer demand for antibiotic-free meat, lemongrass extract presents a natural alternative that could help producers maintain profitability while ensuring the health of their birds.
The study suggests that implementing lemongrass extract at levels of 100 ml/l and 200 ml/l in drinking water could lead to enhanced growth and health outcomes without adverse effects. This positions lemongrass as a viable option for poultry farmers aiming to optimize production while adhering to more stringent health standards.
As the poultry industry continues to evolve, innovations like lemongrass extract could play a significant role in shaping future practices, promoting sustainability, and ensuring food safety. This research not only contributes to the scientific understanding of broiler nutrition but also aligns with broader industry trends towards natural and health-conscious production methods.
