Researchers from Amity University Jharkhand, led by Dr. Rahul Singh, have conducted a comprehensive study on the wind energy potential in three northern districts of Bihar: Bettiah, Madhubani, and Muzaffarpur. This research, published in the journal Transactions on Energy Systems and Engineering Applications, provides valuable insights into the viability of wind energy as a renewable resource in this region.
The study analyzed wind speed data collected over a 12-year period, from April 2008 to March 2020, using data from local meteorological stations. The findings revealed that wind speeds in these districts ranged from 3.2 m/s to 4.7 m/s. To assess the wind resources, the researchers applied the Weibull distribution model, a common statistical method used in wind energy studies. The results showed that the scale and shape parameters of the Weibull distribution were found to be between 10.247 to 11.432 and 3.5718 to 4.0477, respectively.
One of the critical outcomes of this research is the wind power density calculated at a height of 40 meters above ground level, which was determined to be 22.729 W/m² for Bettiah, 26.288 W/m² for Madhubani, and 28.021 W/m² for Muzaffarpur. These figures suggest that while the wind energy potential is not sufficient for large-scale wind power projects, there is an opportunity for small-scale wind turbine installations. Dr. Singh noted, “The findings suggested that the places of the study are not suitable for widespread wind power extraction at a hub height of 40 m but suitable for small-scale wind turbine setup.”
This research opens up avenues for local entrepreneurs and businesses interested in renewable energy solutions. Small-scale wind turbines could provide a reliable energy source for rural communities, helping to meet local energy demands and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, the findings could attract investment in renewable energy infrastructure, potentially leading to job creation in the installation and maintenance of wind energy systems.
As the global energy landscape increasingly shifts towards sustainability, studies like this one are crucial. They not only highlight the potential of renewable resources but also guide policymakers and investors in making informed decisions. The insights from this research published in Transactions on Energy Systems and Engineering Applications could play a significant role in shaping the future of energy in Bihar and beyond.
