Ukraine Pioneers Geothermal Energy with Innovative Power Plant Project

Recent research published in the Geophysical Journal outlines an innovative methodology for harnessing geothermal energy in Ukraine, focusing on the development of a geothermal power plant based on a single isolated well. The project, led by Y.P. Starodub from Lviv State University of Life Safety, aims to create a technical and economic framework for utilizing geothermal energy, which could significantly impact various sectors, including energy, oil and gas, and chemical industries.

The proposed methodology involves extracting heat from hot rocks located deep underground, utilizing a special energy carrier and a specific construction setup. The project requires drilling a well to a depth of 4,702 meters, where temperatures can reach around 130 °C. This deep well, equipped with a non-perforated casing string, will be the cornerstone of the geothermal power station’s operations.

The research outlines a two-stage development process. The first stage focuses on legal and regulatory preparations, including obtaining necessary licenses and permits. This groundwork is crucial for establishing a geothermal electric station that aims to generate both electricity and hydrogen energy for consumers. Starodub emphasizes the importance of this phase, stating, “It is planned to develop a technical and economic feasibility study for the construction of a geothermal electric station.”

The second stage involves the technical preparation of the well, which includes remediation and industrial geophysical studies to assess the well’s condition and the thermal productivity of the surrounding hot rocks. This detailed examination is vital for ensuring the efficiency and reliability of the geothermal power station.

The implications of this research extend beyond energy production. The methodology can also be applied in the oil and gas industry, particularly in utilizing deep wells that are no longer productive for hydrocarbon extraction. Moreover, the findings can benefit sectors such as nuclear, metallurgical, and chemical industries, which are all looking for sustainable energy solutions.
